Robotics & AI classes for kids in Colombo

Colombo has more after-school classes than anywhere else in Sri Lanka, so picking one is hard. On a brochure, a class where children really build robots and learn how machine learning works can look a lot like one where they mostly type in a computer lab. kidslab.lk is taught by Computer Engineering graduates of the University of Ruhuna. You can see what the class is like before you pay anything. The first session is free, and you don't have to enrol after it.

Why online works for Colombo families

The class is live online, so there's no Colombo traffic to sit through. Getting to a weekday-evening or weekend class in Colombo 3 or Nugegoda can easily take an hour each way, for a ninety-minute lesson. This matters most for 9 to 11-year-olds. They can't get to a class and back on their own, so every session takes up an adult's afternoon as well.

The class is open to the whole country, not one neighbourhood. So a child in Colombo is in a group with children from Matara, Jaffna and Kurunegala, instead of children from the same few schools. A lot of this subject is explaining your thinking to someone who tackled the problem a different way, and a mixed group helps with that.

Questions from Colombo

Do I have to travel anywhere in Colombo for these classes?

No. Every session is live online and your child joins from home, so there's no travel inside Colombo at all. The academy's only office is in Matara, and you never need to go there to enrol, attend or finish the programme.

How do kidslab.lk classes compare to an in-person robotics class in Colombo?

The teaching is live, so your child can ask a question and get an answer straight away, the same as in a classroom. What's different is that the group comes from all over the country rather than one part of Colombo, the fee is LKR 5,000 for the full three months, and nobody spends an hour in traffic before and after the lesson.
